CAT
CARE
OWNING
A CAT
Acquiring a cat/kitten is not a decision to be made lightly.
A healthy cat can live for 15 years or more and you must carefully consider
the responsibilities involved in looking after it.
Cats are popular pets as they are less dominating than dogs.
They are also easy to housetrain as they are naturally clean animals.
However, they still need love and attention, good quality food, vaccinations
and regular health checks.
PEDIGREE
OR NON-PEDIGREE
This is a purely personal choice and of course personal budget (pedigree
cats can be quite expensive to purchase)
Pedigree
When deciding on a pedigree cat, make sure you choose a breed that suits
you and your lifestyle, e.g. Persians require a lot of grooming which
is very time consuming. Siamese can be very vocal and demanding.
Non-Pedigree
Your local animal centre always has a number of abandoned cats/kittens
waiting for a loving, caring home and these can often make delightful
pets.
MALE
OR FEMALE
Unless you are buying a pedigree cat specifically for breeding purposes,
you must consider that a kitten will need to be spayed/neutered at 6 months
of age. Neuters of both sexes make ideal pets and they are usually very
affectionate animals.
It is an 'old wives tale' that it is better to let a female have one litter
of kittens before being spayed. This is not advisable, there are already
far too many unwanted/abandoned and homeless kittens.
Whichever cat or kitten you choose, make sure that it appears healthy.
Watch out for any telltale signs of illness, such as sneezing, runny eyes
or lethargy.
THINGS
YOU WILL NEED
Having made a decision and chosen your cat/kitten, you will need to prepare
for its arrival. You will have lots of fun choosing from the extensive
range of products available and there is something to suit every pocket.
Bed
Food
and Water Bowls
Litter,
Tray and Scoop
Collar
and Identity Tag
This is a good idea if the cat is to be allowed out of doors. A flea collar
is both useful and effective for use both indoors and out
Toys
Kittens and also adult cats will love their own toys and will be amused
for many an hour, thus providing exercise and play
Scratching
Post
Not only does the cat like to play on this, but it also deters it from
scratching the furniture
Cat
Carrier
This is essential for safe travelling of your cat e.g. visits to the vet,
holiday cattery etc. You will also need a small blanket or something similar
for inside the carrier
Food
Good quality food is essential and there is a wide range of brands available
SETTLING
YOUR CAT/KITTEN INTO IT'S NEW HOME
Prior to arrival, select a suitable place for the bed, somewhere quiet
and warm and away from draughts.
Place the litter tray in a quiet corner - cats like privacy too!
Place the food and water bowls and any other items which you have purchased,
in suitable places.
Having made the preparations, you now anxiously await the arrival of your
new pet.
Use the cat carrier containing a small blanket, for warmth, to bring your
new pet home.
On arrival, do not over-fuss the cat. Your home will be strange to your
new pet and it will need time to explore and 'find it's feet'. It may
take a few days to settle in, but before long you will be rewarded with
much pleasure and companionship for many years to come.
IMPORTANT!
Fresh drinking water and dried food should be available at all times.
In addition, kittens require 4 small meals per day of a good quality tinned
food or similar.
Adult cats should be fed twice per day.
Keep the litter tray clean at all times.
Keep the cat's bed/bedding clean.
Groom your pet regularly to keep it's coat in good condition.
If you see any sign of illness in your pet, consult a vet. Keep up with
worming and vaccinations and health checks (your vet can advise on this)
GOOD
LUCK!
